Dr. Auñón's particular area of interest is biomedical engineering, and he has received honors for his work in the area of biomedical signal processing. As principal investigator of over 27 research contracts, he has conducted research for agencies such as the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Public Service Colorado, AT&T Corporation and Southwestern Bell Corporation. His publications credits include over 60 refereed journals and conference proceedings as well as a book, Introduction to Probability and Random Processes, written with co-author V. Chandrasekar in 1997. In 1998, Dr. Auñón was named Engineer of the Year for the South Plains Region of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. Among his other honors are: Named a Fellow of IEEE in 1991 (For Contributions in Biomedical Signal Processing); Engineer Alumni Achievement Award, 1997 from George Washington University; Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Award, Education, 1995; Who's Who Among Hispanic Americans, 1991; Fulbright Scholar, 1989; Institute of Cybernetics, Barcelona Spain; and membership in Sigma Xi, Eta Kappa Nu, and Tau Beta Pi honor societies.
